The communications challenge was to turn a highly technical infrastructure announcement into a national story that resonated with policymakers, business leaders, investors, technology stakeholders and the wider public. The campaign needed to establish NEXTDC as a serious regional player while positioning Malaysia at the forefront of Southeast Asia’s digital transformation.

When NEXTDC launched KL1 Kuala Lumpur, its first international data centre and flagship entry into Southeast Asia, the announcement represented more than a facility opening. Valued at approximately RM2.8 billion, KL1 signalled one of the region’s most significant digital infrastructure investments and reinforced Malaysia’s ambition to become a leading AI and digital economy hub.
Laying the Groundwork: Before the Launch
The strategy deliberately elevated the narrative beyond the facility’s technical specifications. Messaging centred on three connected themes: economic impact, AI readiness and nation-building. KL1 was positioned as infrastructure that would support artificial intelligence, cloud computing and high-performance digital workloads while contributing to Malaysia’s broader AI Nation 2030 vision.
A targeted media engagement programme focused on mainstream, business, technology and broadcast media across English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese-language platforms. Priority outlets included New Straits Times, The Star, Berita Harian, Sinar Harian, Utusan Malaysia, RTM and TV3, alongside Digital News Asia, Tech Wire Asia, Data Center Dynamics and CRN Asia.
Risk management was also embedded early. Anticipating questions around sustainability, energy consumption and water usage, the team prepared factual responses, sustainability messaging and stakeholder talking points so potential concerns could be addressed before they became reputational issues.
Launch Day: Creating a Moment of National Relevance
The official launch became a platform to demonstrate how digital infrastructure can drive economic competitiveness, innovation and foreign investment. A strong mix of media, industry stakeholders and government representatives attended, helping elevate the event from a corporate milestone to a development of national significance.
Key messages gained traction throughout the day. The RM2.8 billion investment drew attention, while KL1’s AI-ready capabilities and Tier IV design requirements reinforced NEXTDC’s technology leadership. The event also strengthened the message that Malaysia is emerging as a strategic regional destination for advanced digital infrastructure.
One defining moment was the conversation around sustainability. Because the campaign had anticipated concerns about water use and environmental impact, spokespersons were able to respond clearly and transparently, highlighting recycled water usage and responsible sustainability practices. This helped keep coverage balanced and fact-based.
Sustaining the Momentum: After the Launch
In the weeks after the launch, coverage expanded across mainstream, business, technology and broadcast channels, extending the campaign’s reach beyond event attendees. National outlets such as New Straits Times, The Star, Berita Harian, Sinar Harian, Utusan Malaysia and RTM carried the story, while regional and specialist publications amplified it among technology and business audiences.
The campaign generated 75 pieces of media and social coverage, delivering a PR value of RM863,499 and a social media reach of more than 22,000 users. Coverage spanned online news portals, broadcast segments and social platforms, creating visibility across multiple stakeholder groups.
Most importantly, the coverage retained the intended messages. Journalists consistently framed KL1 as a landmark investment that would strengthen Malaysia’s digital economy, support emerging AI opportunities and position the country as a regional technology hub. Sustainability-related discussion was also contained, with many articles reflecting the campaign’s explanations on recycled water usage and responsible resource management.
Overall media sentiment remained overwhelmingly favourable, with approximately 75–80% of coverage positive, the remainder largely neutral and fact-based, and negative coverage accounting for less than 5% of reporting.
Outcome and Strategic Impact
The KL1 launch illustrates how strategic communications can elevate a technical infrastructure announcement into a broader story about national progress and regional leadership. Through stakeholder engagement, tier-one media relations, government alignment and proactive issues management, NEXTDC successfully owned the narratives of AI infrastructure leadership, economic investment, digital transformation and sustainable growth.
Ultimately, KL1 was not remembered merely as the opening of a data centre. It became a story about Malaysia’s digital future—and NEXTDC successfully positioned itself at the centre of that story.
